About NCLEX
The National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) is a standardized exam developed and administered by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN). It is designed to assess the knowledge, skills, and abilities essential for safe and effective practice as a newly licensed, entry-level nurse. The NCLEX uses computerized adaptive testing (CAT) technology to deliver the exam, ensuring a valid and reliable measurement of nursing competence.
There are two types of NCLEX exams:
NCLEX-RN: For candidates seeking licensure as Registered Nurses (RNs).
NCLEX-PN: For candidates aiming to become Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) or Licensed Vocational Nurses (LVNs).
Both exams are administered by Pearson VUE at designated testing centers. The NCLEX is a computerized adaptive pass-fail exam with a range of 85 to 150 questions. The test begins with easier questions that increase in difficulty as you answer them correctly. If you get a question wrong, they get easier and then increase in complexity again. When you consistently answer questions at a specific baseline, you pass. If you don’t, you fail the exam.
For comprehensive information about the NCLEX, including preparation resources and registration details, you can visit the official NCLEX website. (Keep link)
Eligibility criteria for NCLEX for International Candidates from Nepal
Eligibility requirements for international students to take the NCLEX-RN exam vary by state, as each State Board of Nursing (BON) in the United States sets its criteria. Here’s a general overview:
1. Educational Qualification
Must have completed a nursing program equivalent to a registered nurse (RN) program in the U.S., such as:
Diploma, Bachelor of Science in Nursing (B.Sc.), or an Associate Degree.
The program must meet the standards for theoretical and clinical training, including coursework in medical, surgical, pediatric, psychiatric, and obstetric nursing.
2. Credential Evaluation
Many BONs require international applicants to have their educational credentials evaluated to determine if they meet U.S. standards. Common credentialing agencies include:
CGFNS (Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools).
Other state-approved evaluators.
This evaluation ensures compatibility between your nursing education and the U.S. curriculum.
3. English Proficiency
Non-native English speakers may need to pass an English proficiency test such as:
TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language).
IELTS (International English Language Testing System).
Requirements vary by state.
4. Application to State Board
Submit an application to the nursing regulatory body of the state where you want to obtain licensure.
Provide supporting documents such as:
Passport.
Nursing education transcripts.
Clinical training records.
Proof of license in the home country (if applicable).
5. Authorization to Test (ATT)
After meeting all prerequisites, the BON will grant an Authorization to Test (ATT).
Use this to schedule your exam with Pearson VUE.
6. Background Check
Most BONs require a criminal background check and fingerprinting.
7. Exam Registration
Register for the NCLEX exam through Pearson VUE.
Exam fees: Approximately $200 (NCLEX fee) plus additional BON or international surcharges.
State-Specific Requirements
Each state has specific licensure requirements and processes. It’s vital to check the official website of the State BON you’re applying to for accurate details.
